While he loses his right eye during the mission, Snake is ultimately successful in completing his mission and is awarded the title of Big Boss by President Lyndon Johnson.
During the course of this mission, he teams up with an alleged KGB spy named EVA and fights against the members of the Cobra unit. Afterwards, he is sent on a follow-up mission codenamed "Operation: Snake Eater", where he is sent back to Tselinoyarsk to prevent the completion of Shagohod and assassinate both The Boss and colonel Volgin (her apparent benefactor).
